Sinéad O’Connor — The Voice That Wouldn’t Stay Quiet

Sinéad O’Connor was never afraid to say what she believed, even when it came at a personal and professional cost. She challenged institutions, questioned authority and refused to simply follow the crowd.

That’s the idea behind my new Rola Cola Ray song “Sinéad O’Connor.” It isn’t meant to be a conventional tribute. It’s a warning song about what happens when a voice that challenged the establishment is suddenly gone.

One of the most controversial moments of her career came in 1992, when she appeared on Saturday Night Live and tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II. She was protesting the Catholic Church and its handling of abuse, at a time when her actions were met with huge criticism and hostility.

But Sinéad didn’t back down. She continued to speak openly about subjects that made people uncomfortable. She wasn’t interested in saying what people wanted to hear — she said what she believed needed to be said.

That is where the line in my song comes from:

“You sing with the fox, and dance with the hound.”

For me, it represents hypocrisy, conformity and the strange relationship people can have with those who challenge authority. Someone can be ridiculed while they’re alive, yet their words can take on a very different meaning once they’re gone.

And then the voice really was gone.

On 26 July 2023, Sinéad O’Connor was found unresponsive at her home in south London. She was just 56. Her death was later determined to have been from natural causes.

The questions, however, didn’t disappear with her.

That’s what “Sinéad O’Connor” is about — not simply remembering the singer, but remembering the woman who refused to stay quiet.

The voice stopped.
The warning didn’t.
